The title for this book came from a close friend of ours. I was pregnant with our first child and she was telling me her birth story for the first time. Her story was just what I wanted: the real and the raw, the words describing exactly what it was like to give birth. As she was telling me about her labor experience, she said you really have to “open up and let the train run through you.” The power and honesty conveyed through that line was truly the start of this book.

Over the next year after that inspiration, I continued journaling and collecting snippets from other books I had enjoyed. Slowly I realized I was going to write a book. The words I was writing were useful and not only to myself. Testing out that idea on friends who were pregnant at the time, there was such positive feedback that I kept going.

I wanted to share the real experiences and the positives of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I wanted the details. I wanted others to feel empowered as they read these words. It’s been a five year project, along with the birth of my second child, and it’s been wonderful.
